iPhone 15: Have you been eyeing the new iPhone 15 lineup, but unsure of which model is right for you? Let’s take a closer look at the features of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro to help you make a decision.
One of the most exciting updates is the maximum resolution of 48MP available on all models. However, there are some important details to consider. While all models allow 48MP capture in HEIF or JPEG format, the Pro models also support 48MP Apple ProRAW images for a more dynamic range.
The default capture mode for the main camera creates 24MP images on all models, but the Pro models offer higher image quality with larger file sizes.

While the Pro models have dedicated telephoto cameras, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus can still shoot at a 2x zoom with their main cameras. And if you do want more reach without sacrificing image quality, the iPhone 15 Pro now offers two telephoto options with 3x and 5x zoom capabilities.
Video recording capabilities remain unchanged from previous models, with all models featuring image stabilization and support for 4K and HD recording. The Pro models, however, feature “second-generation” sensor-shift OIS for video.
Overall, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max offer the highest resolution and image quality, but the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus still offer impressive features at a lower price point.
The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max enhance the features of their predecessors. The Pro models can record ProRes video up to 4K at 30fps directly to the phone’s storage, or 4K at 60fps to an external compact SSD.
They also support Log video for greater dynamic range, with ACES color-matching system. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models replace Lightning connector with USB-C, but only the Pro models support USB 3.2 Gen 2 with transfer speeds of up to 10 Gbps.
The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models have a new Action button that can perform several actions, including running shortcuts. The storage sizes for the iPhone 15 range from 128GB to 512GB, while the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models range from 128GB to 1TB.
The screens are the same physical sizes and resolutions as previous models, but the Pro displays feature ProMotion with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz and an always-on mode. The Wi-Fi 6e is used by the Pro models, while the regular models feature Wi-Fi 6 wireless networking. The iPhone 15 starts at $799 for 128GB of storage, while the iPhone 15 Pro starts at $999 for 128GB of storage.
Are you considering getting the iPhone 14 Pro? If you already own last year’s model, the iPhone 14 Pro, you may want to skip upgrading this year. Although the iPhone 15 Pro Max boasts features like a titanium case and a 120mm Equiv camera, if these don’t appeal to you, you can still enjoy some camera benefits through iOS 17, which is now available.
For example, you can retroactively change the focus for Portrait mode images, even on older photos. On the iPhone 14 Pro, the selective focus feature starts on Portrait images from the iPhone 13 Pro. Additionally, the main camera on the iPhone 14 Pro can now capture at 48MP resolution and save to HEIF or JPEG images, not just Apple ProRAW format.
While Apple has retired the iPhone 14 Pro from its current lineup, you may still be able to find it through other sales channels or as a refurbished item in the Apple Store. iPhones retain their value and usefulness for quite some time, so whether you decide to upgrade to the iPhone 15 or hold onto your old model for another year, either choice can be a wise one.
