Review:
Kaathal – The Core is a movie that tells a bold and beautiful story brought to life by Mammootty and Jeo Baby. The writers, Paulson Skaria and Adarsh Sukumaran, have done a great job in presenting the story in a gentle and unfolding manner. The director’s vision has also added a lot of value to the movie by making some key moments feel very impactful.
In this movie, Mammootty plays the role of Mathew Devassy, a man who is chosen by a political party to contest in the local elections. However, just as he accepts this offer, his wife of 20 years, Omana, files for divorce. The story then revolves around why she does this, what it means for everyone involved, and how Mathew will handle this difficult situation.
The movie does a great job of exploring the main issue directly and without any pretense, and also shows the other characters involved in the relationship. It also examines how laws and courts work, and how society – including things like the church and family – is ready for change. It shows how liberating the truth can be for everyone involved.
The movie keeps everything – emotions, music, and drama – very simple and understated, which ironically makes the tension feel even more heightened. The use of sound is also very impressive, as it was in The Great Indian Kitchen. The cinematography and editing have given the movie a gentle mood that is perfect for the story.
Mammootty is outstanding in his role, perfectly portraying Mathew Devassy’s character who is filled with fear, falsehoods, and pathos. Jyothika is also very impressive in her role as a strong and graceful wife who is determined to go through the divorce with dignity. The supporting cast is also excellent.
Kaathal – The Core is a great movie that can make society think and even inspire change. It is a must-watch for anyone who loves a good story and wants to see some great performances.
