Mammootty is no stranger to police stories. During an interview, the actor accidentally revealed the name of the Kannur Squad, which made it clear that his latest project would be a thriller. However, the challenge for him was to bring something new to the table despite having played the role of a cop several times in his career.
The Kannur Squad is a team formed under the Superintendent of Police in the Kannur district. It is based on real-life police investigation stories until the first half of the movie. According to the makers, they used real-life police stories and added fiction to create the plot.
The story takes place between 2015 and 2017 and follows Assistant Superintendent of Police George Martin and his three-member police gang as they investigate and solve unsolved cases. The film starts slowly as the team investigates a few murder cases, but the pace picks up when they receive a new assignment – a high-profile murder case of a politician.
Although the culprits are revealed at the beginning, the movie keeps the audience engaged with its presentation and the process of nabbing the perpetrators.
Throughout the investigation, the script provides insights into the lives of policemen, similar to popular web series like Delhi Crime and Paatal Lok. The emotional journey of lower-rung police officers is intricately woven into the crime investigation, showcasing how these cops make ends meet despite their challenging jobs.
The story may be predictable, given the high-profile case, but director Roby Varghese Raj uses cinematic liberty to set this movie apart from others in the genre. There is some violence, including a scene where George shoots a suspect in the finger and burns bodies, which has become a norm in recent Malayalam movies.
Overall, Kannur Squad is an engaging thriller that offers a realistic portrayal of police investigations.
Kannur Squad is an exciting thriller that features a captivating investigative angle. George and his team go on a journey to various locations such as Mumbai, Faizabad (UP), and even the Indo-Nepal border to catch the criminals.
This thrilling journey gives the audience an insight into the risks taken by police officials to apprehend culprits. The encounter scene in Tikri village, Uttar Pradesh, where George and his team are involved in a fight against the locals, is another highlight of the movie. The action choreography of this scene is crucial, and the background music by Sushin Syam enhances the action sequences and investigation scenes. Very Impressive songs for that screenplay.
Kannur Squad carries the feel of a travel movie as it was shot in multiple locations such as Kannur, Kasargod, Ernakulam, Uttar Pradesh, and Mumbai. Muhammed Rahil’s frames capture the beauty of these places, especially the action sequences in Tikri village and the climax. The journey also allows capturing the beauty of highways and forest areas in different parts of the country.
Directed by debutant Roby Varghese Raj, Kannur Squad is a well-handled movie. Mammootty’s mass scenes, particularly in the second half, elevate the movie to another level. The script establishes all the characters well and maintains an emotional connection with the viewers throughout. Mammootty’s charismatic presence as George Martin steals the show, and the makers have given him enough room to showcase his heroism.
Kannur Squad Online Review
The movie features talented actors such as Aziz Nedumangad, who gets a prominent role as Jose, providing him with a much-needed break in his career. Shabareesh Varma is decent as a police officer, and Rony David, who is the co-writer, excels in emotional scenes.
Kishore as SP Manu Neethi Cholan, a supportive police officer who speaks about his background filled with poverty to senior officials, delivers some dramatic scenes, and the actor does well. Vijayaraghavan as a senior cop is also decent.
However, the movie lacks a female lead, and the women characters are not significant.
